Unsworth released
David Unsworth has been released by Wigan, just four days after his penalty against Sheffield United kept the club in the Premiership.
The defender, who joined Wigan from Sheffield United on a free transfer in January, failed to establish himself as a regular starter in his short stay at The JJB Stadium.
He made only seven appearances but did step off the bench on Sunday to secure a 2-1 victory over The Blades and condemn his former club to relegation.
Aged 33, however, new manager Chris Hutchings has decided there is no future for Unsworth at Wigan.
Hutchings was named as Paul ***ell's successor earlier this week and is determined not to waste any time in preparing for next season.
The former Bradford boss is happy to start work immediately and not to have a summer break.
He said: "The beauty of the situation is that we can start work right away, and that continuity is assured exactly the same way as if Paul was still here.
"I can start planning for next season, thinking about new players, and deciding on the futures of out-of-contract players.
"There's no delay. The work starts now.
"I will be sitting down with each and every one of our players, those in contract and those out of contract, and discussing their situation, my ideas for them and listening to their ideas."
