Boss Brown predicts Swans success

Phil Brown predicts Swansea City will be a Championship promotion "threat" after the Swans knocked his Hull City side out of the Carling Cup.

Brown led Hull to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last term and believes the Swans could emulate the Tigers this season.

"They will certainly equip themselves in the Championship," said Brown.

"If they play with that kind of confidence week in week out, they will be a threat for going up."

Roberto Martinez's Championship new-comers shocked Premier League new boys Hull in the Carling Cup second round on Tuesday.

The Swans recovered from a Dean Windass goal down to beat Brown's boys in extra-time as after Gorka Pintado's leveller, Jordi Gomez completed an impressive come-back from the penalty spot.

Hull manager Brown added: "Roberto obviously has them playing with confidence and they are a technically gifted side."

Martinez, however, played down an immediate promotion to the top-flight.

He said: "It's a great compliment but we know we have to consolidate first."

Martinez, meanwhile, has vowed his Swans side will continue to enjoy their best League Cup run since 1982.

"It is a great achievement to reach the third round for the first time in 26 years," said Martinez.

"I know there were a lot of changes on both sides but it speaks volumes on how far we have come as a football club when we can compete with and beat a Premier League side.

"That is testament to how well prepared and how hard the lads have been working because our quality of play was outstanding.

"We looked the stronger side as the game went on and we played some special football that I hope our fans enjoyed.

"Hull had some very expensive Premier League players but I thought we controlled the game from the start of the second-half.

"We created enough chances after the break to win the game comfortably and it was a pleasure to watch."

Swansea fell behind after 11 minutes when former England international Nick Barmby fed the ball through to veteran Windass to score.

Pintado equalised in the 63rd minute before he hit the post and had an injury-time penalty saved by Hull 'keeper Matt Duke.

But Spaniard Gomez succeeded were his countryman failed as he scored from an extra-time spot-kick.
