Swans plan to clinch league title

Roberto Martinez says Swansea will try to carry on their promotion form and use it to clinch the League One title.

The Swans gained promotion after their 2-1 win at Gillingham at the weekend setting a club record of 86 points for the season.

However, despite being seven points clear at the top they must still beat Yeovil on Saturday to become champions.

"We're going carry on with our level of performance and we'll try to win the title," said Martinez.

"When you are in this situation, as a football club, just for the fans and from a personal point of view, from the players' point of view, when you can try to win a title it's well worth it.

"When you're in a situation like this you shouldn't take it for granted. Yes, we are happy we've got promotion but we'll try to finish as we started.

"The most important thing is getting to the next level and achieving promotion and that's what we've done."

The 34-year-old Spaniard was a shock appointment when he took over from Kenny Jackett at the Liberty Stadium in February 2007 but he has exceeded expectations.

In what is his first season as a manager, Martinez has helped the club set a club record of 86 points for a season, beating the 85 of John Hollins' 1999-2000 side.

He is now looking forward to taking the same squad of players into the Championship in what will be the Swans first season in the league's second tier for 24 years.

"If we can keep the core of the players we've got I'll be very, very happy," said Martinez.

"Obviously, the British market is a really, really expensive one and sometimes what you have to do is try to find the quality abroad.

"We've done that and we always keep assessing players that could be available. But we shouldn't lose the focus that the players that got the club promoted deserve all the praise and we need to make sure that we help them to keep pushing the football club forward.

"They are of a good age and they have a fantastic attitude and as they have proved they are very, very talented.

"They have got an attitude that they want to be successful, they are hungry for success and you need that."
