Iron keen on Beckford

S****horpe United boss Nigel Adkins remains resolute in his chase for Leeds United's Jermaine Beckford.

The former Wealdstone striker impressed during his three-month loan spell and Adkins is keen to push through a permanent transfer.

Beckford bagged eight goals in 18 appearances for The Iron and the club now hope he can spearhead their attack in the Championship.

Adkins has already held talks with Beckford's agent and has been given the indication that the pacey striker wants to stay at Glanford Park.

"I have already spoken to his agent and Jermaine seems keen to come," he told the S****horpe Evening Telegraph.

Beckford's status at Leeds remain unclear and Dennis Wise is yet to decide if he is in his plans, or whether he will be sold to fund rebuilding plans.

Meanwhile, Adkins has informed Stephen Torpey, Neil MacKenzie and Ashley Allanson that their Iron deals will not be extended.

Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins says discussions have taken place with Leeds over Jermaine Beckford's future, but admits he still has no idea when he will be able to complete a deal for the player.

Newly-promoted Scunthorpe have made a bid for Beckford - thought to be around £250,000 - and Leeds are now able to buy and sell players again following Ken Bates' takeover last week.

However, the bid has yet to be accepted and, with Leeds believed to be holding out for more money, Adkins concedes the saga could rumble on until the end of the transfer window.

"We believe we have got a very good bid on the table and there has been discussions with Leeds United," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"We just have to see where that takes us. They hold the cards in that they have got him, so it might be a bit drawn out.

"The top and bottom of it is he is a Leeds player. We have put in a bid for him and would like him to come to us.

"I don't know if he will be here for the start of the season. I will wait until the last day of the transfer window if I have to."

23-year-old Beckford had a successful loan spell with Scunthorpe last season as the side ended the season as League One champions.

United's chances of signing Jermaine Beckford from Leeds appear to be over, with the striker impressing during the Yorkshire side's first pre-season game.

Beckford ended last season on loan at Scunthorpe, helping the Iron seal the League One title.

Iron boss Nigel Adkins has made an approach for the forward, but he caught the eye of Leeds boss Dennis Wise during the friendly with non-league side York City on Friday night.

"Jermaine is like a breath of fresh air," hailed Wise, who will need to rely on youngsters like Beckford as his side tackle League One this term.

"He is fit and has been working hard. He has lost a percentage of body fat, he's done all the running and I am pleased."

At last a bit of sense from Leeds. Beckford did very well for Scunthorpe in this division last season, so let's keep him and hope he does the same for us.
