Premier League officials and club chairmen will assess the fall-out from the controversial "39th game" proposal at their summer meeting on Thursday.
The idea of the 20 top-flight teams playing an additional league match overseas met with widespread criticism when it was first mooted in February.
Other options to strengthen the brand globally will be up for discussion.
They could include pre-season tournaments in foreign cities involving Premier League clubs.
League officials watched with interest last July as a crowd of 40,000 in Hong Kong watched Portsmouth beat Liverpool on penalties in the Barclays Asia Trophy.
It is believed one proposal would be to extend these branded friendly competitions to other areas such as the Middle East, South Africa and the USA.
Premier League clubs are also set to outlaw third-party ownership of players to avoid future controversies such as the Carlos Tevez saga.
In future, clubs will have to buy out all third-party owners so that they own players' registrations completely.
So they haven't given up the idea yet, not long before you'll have to move to China to watch your faveourite team play at home then.....
