Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has hit back at Niall Quinn after the Sunderland chairman accused the south coast club of spending 'silly money' this summer.
Redknapp has brought six players to Fratton Park so far, including Sulley Muntari, David Nugent and John Utaka for a combined sum reported to be £20million. That led Quinn, who himself spent £5million to prise Michael Chopra from Cardiff as well as funding a number of boss Roy Keane's other acquisitions, to blast Pompey and West Ham for inflating the price of what he deems average players. Those comments infuriated the 60-year-old Redknapp, particularly given the fact the Black Cats matched Redknapp's reputed £6million offer to sign Nugent from Preston. "I don't know why Niall's saying that. What's it got to do with Niall Quinn really?" he said. "They've just paid five and a half to six million pound for a lad from Cardiff (Chopra). He should stop poking his nose into other people's business. "It's not their business, they should look after their own team. He should worry about what Sunderland are doing and keep their own house in order. "People shouldn't talk like that. I never criticise other people's teams or other people's signings, maybe that's why I've been in the game so long and why I do what I do. "I got Sylvain Distin and Hermann Hreidarsson on free transfers. I paid money for three players, and I have no doubt Sulley Muntari in particular will be a big success. "They offered the same amount of money for David Nugent that we did but he chose us. Maybe he's upset about that." Quinn had named Pompey as one of the teams responsible for pushing up transfer fees for players who cannot justify the price tag. "If I was going to spend a fortune on breaking the bank, I would be going after the players Liverpool or Manchester United wanted to sign," said the Sunderland chairman. "But, in the middle, people are fighting each other and raising the prices for the same players. You can see it with West Ham and Portsmouth." Redknapp's response to that came after his side had lifted the Barclays Asia Trophy thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool after the teams played out an entertaining goalless draw at Hong Kong Stadium. David James proved the hero both in normal time and during the shoot-out as he produced a string of fine saves before denying spot-kicks from new signings Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun to clinch victory. Despite being outplayed for the majority of the game, Redknapp was delighted with the resilience his side displayed against a side expected to challenge for the Premier League title this season. "We did great today. We worked hard and the effort my lads have put in over the two games has been first-class," he added. "We showed character. The goalkeeper was fantastic and the lads defended really well so all credit to the team today. "Our two centre-halves, Sol Campbell and Sylvain Distin, were magnificent. "Liverpool are a great side, they were Champions League finalists last season and we had to hang in there, we had to work. "It wasn't easy because they pass the ball so well, they keep possession so well and their movement's fantastic." |
