Posh ambition was key factor

NEW boy Russell Martin reckons Posh have more ambition, more ability and better prospects than clubs in the Championship.
The 22 year-old right-back became the first summer signing for Posh manager Darren Ferguson yesterday when agreeing to move from Wycombe on a three-year contract.

Martin, a former England youth international, was a virtual ever-present in the Wycombe side that reached the League Two play-off semi-finals last season.

Posh pounced when learning that Martin had fallen out of contract at Adams Park and that he had held transfer talks with two Championship clubs.

Martin said: "I did speak to a couple of Championship clubs and I had also been talking to Wycombe about a new deal, but meeting Darren Ferguson and Barry Fry swung it for me.

"I obviously already knew about the ability in the squad from playing against them in League Two. They were the best team we played all season.

"But the sheer ambition of the club blew me away. I knew I was signing after one conversation and I can't wait to get stuck in.

"I played every game for Wycombe last season apart from the first and last ones in League Two. I am tall for a full-back, but I love the role.

"I get forward as often as I can and last season I was credited with more goal assists than any other Wycombe player, but I am prepared to defend and throw my body in the way of shots.

"The manager has made it clear that he is aiming for another promotion this season and that suits me down to the ground. I want to play as high as I can."

Posh are still negotiating a fee with Wycombe for Martin. If they can't agree it will be refered to a tribunal - Martin is only 22 so ineligible for a Bosman free transfer.

Martin started his career with his hometown club Brighton, but moved to Wycombe before making his professional debut. He made 142 appearances and scored five goals.

Ferguson was delighted to land Martin. He admitted he wasn't one of his original transfer targets.

Ferguson said: "It all happened out of the blue. As soon as I knew Russell was available I moved as he was by far and away Wycombe's best player last season.

"He had already spoken to Championship clubs, but he chose us which is a great boost for us. I'm still talking to a couple of other players and if I get them that would probably be enough.

"I'm after a right winger and a midfielder. I could use Chris Whelpdale as cover at right back."
