New signing John Hartson inspired West Brom to a narrow win at Motherwell.

The Welsh striker's simple tap-in after goalkeeper Graeme Smith spilled Nigel Quashie's free-kick gave the Baggies the lead after 32 minutes.

Hartson was involved in Albion's second when he raced through on goal and Brian McLean's challenge on him only diverted the ball into his own net.

But Motherwell pulled one back with 16 minutes remaining when Steven McGarry rifled home from 12 yards.
