League 2 Pub Guide

Right boys and girls, where should we go and where shouldn't we go for a beer and/or food at your ground?

I was thinking of doin this, but as an Away day guide IE Directions from train station/driving , watering holes, food prices etc! Only for County, but I've been busy!
Might do a rough draught in a bit then edit it later!

A Rough guide.

Thirst things First................ Where to drink!

There must be 20 watering holes within half a mile of the ground. And there's plenty more in the Town Centre which is less than a mile away!

Firstly can I recomend that any one with children try the Family Lounge at Edgeley Park. It is located in the Pavillion Suite at the ground floor level of the Cheadle End. The Cheadle End is the 'Big' end with the ticket office and the car park(players, sponsors, officials etc only). There will be quizes, game and other activities for the kid's aswell as sweets(mmm lovely e numbers) and hot food. There is of course a Licensed Bar.

The Armoury.
Situated on Greek St. at the roundabout between the station and the ground! Home of Yellow Block on match days, maybe it should be renamed Geek St.?
A warm welcome and excellent reasonably priced Robinsons Beer.

The Grapes.
Stagger over the road from The Armoury onto the pedestrianised Castle Street and the 1st pub you hit(ouch) is the Grapes, another Robbies pub. Used to be a penny or so cheaper than The Armoury(cheapskates) and the beer was also excellent, but i've not been in for a season or two.

The Jolly Crofter.
Still winding your way up Castle Street.I have been in here, but can't remember much about it.

The Pineapple.
You're still on Castle Street, but you obviously can't walk in a straight line, as you'rw on the oposite side of the street! Not been in here fo over 20 years, but don't let that put YOU off.

The Windsor.
Is now closed. This means you have an extra hundred yards between pub's.
To be honest it wasn't that good a pub, so don't get too upset.

The Sir Robert Peel.
Probably the best place for banter, and home of the Peel's on Wheels crowd. If you want to know why Stockport County are said to have more original songs than anyone else this is the place to start your research.
The Bitter's some smooth flow stuff, but the Guiness was alright last time Iwas in(last season). Pretty sure they do draught Stella for the more discerning amongst you.

The Prince Albert.
Another one I've not been in for a while. Seems fairly lively though. You've probably fallen over in the Bobby Peel beer garden, and whilst trying to reorientate yourself seen the flood lights and meandered in that direction? I advise you use the crossing as you try to traverse the main road(Mercian Way)

You will reach the ground and suddenly realise there is a pint sized hole in your gullet and at least 2 pints in your bladder that when eptied will need refilling!
Now we come to the tragic bit! THERE IS NO ALCOHOL AVAILABLE IN THE AWAY END OF THE GROUND!
Luckily you are on Hardcastle Street(the tarmac is actually the same consistency as the tarmac on Castle Street) and you've time for a quick 1 or 2 at the Bowling Club at the Railway End of the Ground.

Town center pubs worth a mention are:

The White Lion: Large town centre pub with Sky Sports and plenty of screens to view on. Beer not badly priced.

Calverts Court (J.D Weatherspoons): Cheap ale and food is reasonable. Usual spoons decor.

Stockport Arms: Usually has a drinks promotion on.

Cobdens: Named after one of the towns famous sons. Good on a Saturday evening.

Unity: Worth a look for a quick pint before the train home, also opposite McDonalds.

Generally Chesterfield is Ok miss the County and the Barley Mow unless you dont have colours on. The town centre is generally alright but some dont let football fans in i.e any form of football gear will get you stopped. At the back of the away end is the Industry and the Chesterfield arms both are recognised as away pubs. Food outlets are the usuals eg Macdonalds etc all located in the town centre many pubs do decent bar meals but avoid the ground fare its lookwarm and overpriced. generally Chesterfield will welcome you. Anyone looking for trouble usually finds it but if you are not you will be welcomed

well there is a few pubs for you to choose from in rotherham

RUFC suite- this is for home fans only, but if you get there early. 12-1, and dont have your shirt showing, then i think you will be able to go in. it has a big screen and 3 other wide screen tellys with sofas and tables. not bad prices for the booze as well. its on the ground, so you can leave at 3

The White Lion- this is an ok pub, has got a TV, but not got sky, a few people go in, about 200 yards walk to the ground. you can get some food, but not much choice. nice friendly atmosphere there as well. also i go in for a couple before heading down to the RUFC suite, so you may be lucky to see me.

Town Centre
The Effingham Arms, New Countey (was Countey Borough) and the Angel- these pubs you really dont want to go in, they have a few strange people in who just are there to cause trouble with away fans, the famous Section 5 go in these lol,

There are many good pubs in the town centre though, the Litten Tree is very good. 3 wide screen TVS and good prices on beer, friendly atmosphere and you are able to get some food in as well.

if you decide to travel through kimberworth to get to millmoor, come of junction 35, this is about a 5 minute drive to the ground, there are lots of good pubs, the big Effingham Arms i would say is the best, able to to food, good beer, pool table, games machines and able to get some food. nice friendlt atmosphere. there is also the Sir colin cambell, manor barn and the drawbride in kimberworth, all the same.

The pub the away fans all seem to go in is Moulders Rest, 2 min walk to ground, 2 min walk to town centre, bookies near by, lots of big screen TVs, has Sky, cheap Beer, get food, allows kids.

hope this helps, if you need anymore advice go on millersmad or just ask people when you get there, most people will point you in the right direction
