England call-up for Coventry duo

England call-up for Coventry duo

Coventry City defensive pair of Scott Dann and Danny Fox have been called up to the England Under-21 squad.
It is the first time either of the players have been selected at this level and both only recently made the step up to Championship football.

The duo moved to the Sky Blues from League One club Walsall in January.

Dann and Fox will link up with the national squad after Coventry's match at Southampton on Saturday for the game against Poland at Molineux on Tuesday

England duo are 'the future of Coventry City'

RAY RANSON insists the call-ups of Scott Dann and Daniel Fox to the England Under-21 squad sends out a clear statement of intent about Coventry City's future.

The Sky Blues chairman was instrumental in signing the pair from Walsall in January and aims to help manager Chris Coleman recruit more young players of the same quality in the summer.

"I am immensely proud of the two lads," said Ranson who was capped 10 times himself for the Under-21s including captaining the side to a European Championship success against West Germany in 1982.

"It's a fantastic honour to play for your country and it is a great honour for the football club.

"The call ups set the tone for what we are trying to do here at Coventry by bringing in bright, young talent who can progress and take the club forward.

"They have both shown that they want to play for Coventry City and are helping do all they can to ensure we get enough points to stay in this league."

Manager Chris Coleman added: "The chairman knows what he wants and he knows his football.

"We will not be trying to sign 34-year-old has-beens.

"These two are classic examples of what we are trying to get at this club -good, young talent because you can build a team around players like that, and I am absolutely delighted for the pair of them."

Dann and Fox are in Stuart Pearce's squad to face Poland in a friendly at Molineux next Tuesday.

The last City players to play for England Under 21s were Chris Kirkland and Jay Bothroyd in a 3-0 win over Mexico at Leicester in May 2001.

Before that Gary McSheffrey made the squad for a European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria in June 1999 but didn't play.

Calum Davenport was also in a squad in October 2003 but he only made the bench.

Prior to Kirkland and Bothroyd, Marcus Hall and Darren Huckerby were the only others since Peter Atherton in 1991.
