Histon midfielder Adrian Cambridge has turned down a move to local Blue Square Premier rivals Cambridge United.

The 33-year-old, who has been at Histon for eight years, was a boyhood U's fan.

Histon manager Steve Fallon told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Obviously he has had a lot of hard thinking to do over the last couple of weeks.

"But we're happy with his decision, he's decided to stay with us for whatever reasons and the reasons are his own."

Fallon admitted he did not expect their rivals to show interest in the midfielder, who made 41 league appearances last season as the Stutes almost reached the play-offs.

"Ability-wise I'm not surprised, but it was a little bit of a shock when they asked if they could speak to him. But he is a good player and he has done well against them."

Whilst the club reluctantly allowed their veteran star to speak with the U's, Fallon confirmed it would take more to prise away their younger stars.

"We're looking to build and get a team here that's strong.

"They [Cambridge United] showed a lot of interest in Antonio Murray and fortunately we managed to keep him at Histon." One [new signing] is all agreed, it's just a case of putting pen to paper

Fallon is yet to add any new faces to his squad for next season, but is confident of making progress in the coming days.

"One [new signing] is all agreed, it's just a case of putting pen to paper...so we're pretty hopeful.

"He will be pushing Antonio and Danny [Wright] very, very strongly, so we'll have three very good players fighting for the two striker's spots."
