Well it was a long time ago 1967 in fact, Coventry's first season in the Old First Division, watching Coventry play Manchester Utd at Highfield Road and winning 2-0, goals by Maurice Setters and Ernie Machin. On the pitch that day heros of my youth, Bobby Charlton, George Best to name but two.....The ground was so full being only a ten years old I was allowed to sit and watch the game from the touch line....and of course run on the pitch when Coventry scored and be told in no uncertain terms by Dave Clements to get back off the pitch young man....not quite phased that way.
Probably not the greatest sporting moment in history but, it locked me into supporting Coventry for the next forty years and probably beyond, if you look below its been forty years of suffering.... Below is the final placings for the 1967/68 season, interesting that forty years later and the league looks so similar, could it be Man.City's year? to top United again... Last game played on Tuesday 21st May 1968 1 Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3 Liverpool 4 Leeds United 5 Everton 6 Chelsea 7 Tottenham Hotspur 8 West Bromwich Albion 9 Arsenal 10 Newcastle United 11 Nottingham Forest 12 West Ham United 13 Leicester City 14 Burnley 15 Sunderland 16 Southampton 17 Wolverhampton Wanderers 18 Stoke City 19 Sheffield Wednesday 20 Coventry City 21 Sheffield United 22 Fulham
