My most memorable game was my first Hibs match. Hibs v AEK Athens Thursday 27th September 2001. I have never been to match like it, never ever been able to beat the atmosphere at that match. It converted me instantly and I spent the next 3 years in Scotland following Hibs (still a Rovers fan but I missed my football while living in Scotland). A friend who is a Pompey fan came with me and you know how loud Pompey fans get.. well even he said it was something special that night.
Hibs won the match 3-2 but lost the tie on aggregate. Each time Hibs scored a fan from the East Stand broke through the line of police and ran to the opposite corner, knowing they'd be arrested. Only one fan each time but there was a big rush to be that one fan!! I was in the South stand next door to the away fans, possibly enhancing the atmosphere around me. I think it's one of those where you just had to be there, because I can never seem to find the words to describe it. |

"I don't worship Allah, I don't worship Christ!
Although on reflection, they're probably quite nice! There's one god I worship, There's one god I adore! His name is John Hardiker and City whats the score? He scored one with his right foot he scored one with his head! And when the second hit the net, those faded *******s fled! Oh... Who put the ball in City's net....etc" "Blue Moon, You started singing too soon! You thought you'd beat us five nil, Till John came in for the kill" Tuesday March 19th 2002 Roy of the Rovers stuff! We'd been relegated 3 days before! We had a cobbled together team including a YTS lad on £17 a week! Our most hated rivals had already won promotion and needed to win to secure the championship with about 4 games to go! I'd been to every game home and away including the run of 13 straight defeats! We were obviously in for a thrashing! The opposition supporters, many of who had turned their back on the home town club, were the most arrogant in the football league and hated us because we showed their hipocracy for what it was, would have as many in the ground as us home supporters! It was going to be humiliating in the ground in the pubs and at work! You have to experience the lows to really appreciate Highs!
