Liverpool won the Championship for the 18th time.
English clubs were slowly being let back into European competition. Liverpool were barred for a further season. Aston Villa qualified for the UEFA Cup; Manchester United won the FA Cup (for a record equalling 7th time) and qualified for the Cup Winners Cup.

Nottingham Forest won the League Cup for the 4th time equalling Liverpool's record.

Italy's clubs completed a unique treble by winning all three European trophies. The European Cup was won by AC MIlan, the UEFA Cup by Juventus, the Cup Winners' Cup by Sampdoria.
In addition, both UEFA Cup finalists (Juventus and Fiorentina) were from the same country (Italy). This was the fifth time that this competition had produced finalists from the same country.
