The Top Division is reduced to 20 clubs.
In injury time of the last game of the season, Arsenal scored a goal beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield. This win gave Arsenal the same number of points as Liverpool and the same goal difference. Arsenal won the Championship because they had scored 6 goals more. This was the closest Championship finish in the history of the League. The Liverpool v Arsenal game had been postponed from earlier in the season and was being played after the FA Cup final which Liverpool had won. For the second consecutive season, Liverpool were denied the League and FA Cup double by a London club. This was the first time since 1952 that the season ended with two clubs playing each other for the Championship. The FA Cup final was a repeat of 1986, and was the second all-Mersey final.
