The Top Division was reduced to 21 clubs with an eventual reduction to 20 clubs. This was the first change in the size of the Top Division since 1920.
Four clubs were relegated.

Wimbledon won the FA Cup ten years after being a non-League club. This result denied Liverpool the League and FA Cup double.

Liverpool won their 17th Championship and equalled Everton's record number of 90 points but by playing two games less. Their 29 match unbeaten league run at the beginning of the season equalled the Top Division record. This was the 7th consecutive season that the Championship had remained in the city of Liverpool.
