Everton won the Championship with a record points total (90), and a record 13 point winning margin. They almost completed a treble as they won the Cup Winners Cup but lost in the FA Cup final. This is the second time that the two FA Cup finalists are the previous two winners of the trophy.
Both League Cup finalists were relegated. Norwich City became the only club to win a major trophy and be relegated in the same season. They were relegated with 49 points, the highest total for a 22 club Top Division with 3 points for a win. Liverpool reached the European Cup final for the second year running. Serious and fatal crowd trouble at the game lead to all English clubs being banned from European competition for several years. This had been Liverpool's 21st consecutive season in Europe, as well as their 8th European final, both records. Stoke City collected 17 points, the fewest number for a 22 club Top Division with 3 points for a win. When Juventus won the European Cup, they became the first club to win all three European trophies.
