3 points for a win was introduced.
Liverpool won the Championship for the 13th time. They also retained the League Cup. Leeds United are relegated and would find it hard to reach the heights of the 1st division for quite a number of years. Their year started bad with the 5 v 1 defeat at the start of the season to newly promoted Swansea City. Aston Villa won the European Cup keeping the trophy in England for the 6th consecutive year. Tottenham Hotspur won the FA Cup for a record equalling 7th time from seven final appearances. They became the first club to reach both domestic cup finals in the same season. They became the first club since 1962 to win the FA Cup in successive seasons. Queens Park Rangers were the 18th second level club to reach the final. This was the fourth all-London final. Swansea City, as a Welsh club, could not qualify for the UEFA Cup in the English League. Their place was taken by Southampton. They qualified for the Cup Winners' Cup by winning the Welsh Cup.
