3 points for a win was introduced.
Liverpool won the Championship for the 13th time. They also retained the League Cup.
Leeds United are relegated and would find it hard to reach the heights of the 1st division for quite a number of years. Their year started bad with the 5 v 1 defeat at the start of the season to newly promoted Swansea City.

Aston Villa won the European Cup keeping the trophy in England for the 6th consecutive year.

Tottenham Hotspur won the FA Cup for a record equalling 7th time from seven final appearances. They became the first club to reach both domestic cup finals in the same season. They became the first club since 1962 to win the FA Cup in successive seasons. Queens Park Rangers were the 18th second level club to reach the final. This was the fourth all-London final.

Swansea City, as a Welsh club, could not qualify for the UEFA Cup in the English League. Their place was taken by Southampton. They qualified for the Cup Winners' Cup by winning the Welsh Cup.

This was sure a good if not great season for the Swans, i was a young gun at this time and i remember the result 5-1 against leeds as if it was yesterday. We paid a then record fee for Liverpools Colin Irwin, we was never out of the top six position in the league, we lost to Locomotiv Leipzig in the ECWC, we beat Cardiff City over two legs to win the Welsh Cup, so in comparison it was the Swans best ever Season in the Top flight. Sadly the Swans was relegated the following season despite Bob Latchford scoring 20 goals, we had a famous win in the ECWC against Sliema Wanderers (lol, who!!! yes i know) athey were a Maltese Club. We also beat Wrexhah over two legs the same season to win the Welsh cup once again.
