Liverpool became Champions for the 8th time, equalling Arsenal's record. Liverpool also won the UEFA Cup becoming the sixth English club in six years to win it (or its previous incarnation, the Fairs Cup). This was the first time that the Champions also won a European trophy.
West Bromwich Albion were relegated after 24 consecutive seasons in the Top Division.

Tottenham Hotspur became the first club to win the League Cup twice. This gained them qualification into the UEFA Cup. Because of the "one city, one club" rule (inherited from the Fairs Cup), Tottenham Hotspur's UEFA Cup qualification excluded Arsenal, who finished 2nd in the League. This anomaly made the European football authorities abolish the "one city, one club" rule.

Leeds United reached a record fourth European final.

Sunderland became the first second level club since 1931 to win the FA Cup.

It just shows how football has changed over the years, rules coming in, and rules going out, but the teams at the top winning trophies are nearly always the same.
