Rovers send boro packing
DONCASTER Rovers got back to winning ways following their midweek draw at Notts County, by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 at home last night.
"It was an excellent workout for us," said manager Dave Penney.
"We kept another clean sheet and scored two excellent goals.
"We could have had two more goals but James Coppinger and Bruce Dyer missed penalties.
"Paul Heffernan took the penalties last season before he was injured, after Michael McIndoe went to Derby on loan, and he will take them this season.
"It is a massive bonus having Heff fit again and scoring goals. We know he can score goals and that he is a great finisher.
"Heff scored after just a couple of minutes at Notts County in his first start of pre-season, and to get another goal will have done his confidence a lot of good. As will the fact that he also got 90 minutes under his belt.
"We also wanted to give Jonathon Forte a full game. He is a bit behind most of the other players in terms of fitness because he has been ill and that is why there was a delay in him joining us.
"One or two others also played a full game. We would probably have taken off a couple had it being a league game but we wanted to give players 90 minutes whatever the result."
There was some disappointment in the crowd that the Premiership club, who play Sheffield Wednesday today, were without some of their big name stars.
But said Penney: "It is about the same sort of side that I thought they would play; it was a similar side to the one that beat Barnsley on Tuesday.
"Even the younger players who played have appeared in their first team.
"They have some good young footballers some of whom will go on to bigger and better things.
"They all passed the ball well and Boro kept possession well and made us work hard which was good for our fitness."
Said Boro boss Gareth Southgate: "With us having two games in successive days it is a case of mixing and matching, though it will be a more senior squad against Sheffield Wednesday.
"We knew they were a good footballing side from last season's Carling Cup and they have brought in some good players since then.
"I know all about Bruce Dyer, who scored Doncaster's second goal because we played together at Crystal Palace."
Rovers, who will field Andy Warrington, Sean McDaid, Jason Price, Sean Thornton and Lewis Guy, travel to Gainsborough Trinity this afternoon.
Penney has made two approaches to clubs in his seach for a big forward and there could be developments in the near future.
