John inspires Sky Blues
Coventry moved into tenth spot in the Championship with a 2-1 win over Colchester at the Ricoh Arena.
Goals in each half from Stern John and Michael Doyle were enough to give the Sky Blues the points, although they were made to sweat for the victory after Jamie Guy pulled a goal back late on for Colchester.
Coventry started brightly and Colin Cameron flashed a left-footed volley just wide on seven minutes.
The home side should have broken the deadlock on 16 minutes when Leon McKenzie burst past Greg Halford and pulled the ball back for John 12 yards from goal, but the striker blazed his shot over the crossbar.
Jamie Cureton had Colchester's first real chance of the game on 20 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area which Sky Blues goalkeeper Andy Marshall gathered at the second attempt.
The visitors suffered a double injury blow in the first half with Kevin Watson and Richard Garcia both being forced off with knocks before the break.
Coventry broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time with John collecting a pass from Cameron and drilling a low shot past Colchester goalkeeper Aidan Davison.
McKenzie missed a good opportunity to score on 54 minutes when he headed Cameron's corner over the crossbar.
Coventry doubled their lead on 69 minutes when John fed the onrushing Doyle inside the box and the midfielder swept his shot past Davison.
Kevin Kyle should have added a third on 74 minutes when he rose highest to meet Cameron's corner, but the former Sunderland man fail to direct his header on target.
Colchester pulled a goal back five minutes from time when substitute Guy curled a shot into the bottom corner past Marshall.
The visitors threw everything in attack in the closing stages, but Coventry held on to record the win.
