Leon Best's Departure
Well now that the chaos of the January Transfer window is now behind us, I wonder how good this system is.
Newcastle have reportedly paid £2million to Coventry for Leon Best, a striker who in my mind is worth only about a free transfer. As the main striker for Coventry in over one hundred games he scored twenty two goals. I watch Best play against Blackpool last week end and found uninspiring, inactive and more or less ineffective, now I know strikers need to good support and a supply of balls fed to them that they can do something with, but it was only after Best was substituted and Freddie Eastwood replaced him that we saw any flair or threat up front. The same supply route but Eastwood made chances for himself.
I wonder if Newcastle panic in needing a striker and failing to get their first choice or even perhaps their second jumped for Best. After my slagging of him he'll probably get a hat-trick against us in a few weeks time at St.James but I don't see him doing anything (Its eat my hat time I suppose if he does)
In a time when clubs are strapped for cash and trying to reduce wage bills shouldn't perhaps the lower leagues be able given some latitude to conduct their dealing over a longer period, perhaps reducing the pressure to sign players and agree terms that may not be truly favourable to the club.
