Coventry City favourites to sign Freddy Eastwood

Taken from Coventry Evening Telegraph

COVENTRY CITY look favourites to land Freddy Eastwood after the striker was transfer-listed by Wolves.

The former Southend United goal scoring sensation notched an impressive 49 goals in 102 starts to earn him a £1.5 million move to Molineux 12 months ago.

But he is desperate to put a disappointing season behind him with a fresh start.

The 24-year-old agreed to join the Sky Blues on loan six weeks ago with a view to a permanent move until Wanderers pulled the plug at the last minute.

But the quick and exciting forward is understood to still be keen to sign for City and the decision to put him on the transfer list gives Chris Coleman the green light to go and get him for what should be a knock-down price.

Wolves are believed to be looking to recoup the fee they paid for him but three goals in 10 starts and 21 substitute appearances will have driven his value down significantly.

Explaining where things went wrong this season, manager Mick McCarthy says the player just doesn't fit into his team, although Eastwood was always a big fans' favourite whom many supporters believe wasn't given a decent chance.

"It's been disappointing," said McCarthy.

"I have had talks with him and there have been times when he hasn't done well enough. Maybe that's me.

"Freddy is Freddy and he just doesn't fit into my team. I thought he would and he thought he would but it hasn't happened.

"It's nothing personal. He's just not going to get into my side.

"He wants to play and he's been made available for transfer."

Asked if he had any regrets in signing him, McCarthy added: "I don't do that regrets nonsense.

"I had watched him often enough and so had other people and we thought he'd be a great player in the side, but it just hasn't worked out.

"He might be the best he can at what he does and I don't think that has happened during the season. It is just not for me."
