Fowler should be fit for opener

Cardiff boss Dave Jones is confident that Robbie Fowler will be fit for Saturday's season opener against Stoke.

The former Liverpool striker limped out of his debut on Saturday with a thigh strain after just 25 minutes of the 1-0 friendly win over FC Twente.

"Over the last couple of days Robbie has felt stiff and sore and tired, we've pushed him hard," Jones said.

"We took him off as soon as it (the strain) started to tighten up but we've still got a week to get him ready."

Fowler looked bright and eager, the 32-year-old showing some neat touches in his cameo against the Dutch Eredivisie outfit.

The former England hitman was replaced by Warren Feeney up front, who showed the strength in depth the Bluebirds now have by scoring the winning goal within four minutes of coming on.

Northern Ireland international Feeney smashed home a fine cross from Trevor Sinclair, who produced a classy performance from right midfield.

Jones confirmed that Cardiff are still in the transfer market to sign another striker, but praised Feeney's contribution.

"He's worked hard, he's got better at certain things and he'll learn even more," Jones said.

"He's not a forgotten man around here, he's come on and taken his chance well although we're still looking at another forward."

Cardiff central defender Glenn Loovens also took a knock and he left the Ninian Park pitch after 67 minutes.
