Norwich 1 - 1 Bury

Norwich 1-1 Bury

Andy Bishop celebrates after putting Bury in front
Bury were denied a shock victory at Norwich as Gary Doherty's late equaliser earned the Canaries an FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday week.
Andy Bishop gave Bury the lead in the 72nd minute when he headed home Brian Barry-Murphy's free-kick.

But eight minutes later Doherty scored after Bury goalkeeper Jim Provett had saved from Mark Fotheringham.

The visitors had a chance to snatch victory late on but Glynn Hurst sent his shot wide of goal.

Under-fire Bury boss Chris Casper had not won in seven games, a 1-1 draw against Lincoln on New Year's Day ending a six-game losing run.

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder named an attack-minded team with teenage striker Chris Martin playing alongside fellow forwards Darren Huckerby and Jamie Cureton.

And the Canaries almost took a first-minute lead, but his close-range header from a Lee Croft corner went wide and veteran Dion Dublin, playing at centre-back, was also off target when he rose highest to meet a Fotheringham free-kick.

The hosts' superiority was undermined by poor finishing and Cureton's first-time volley drifted wide.

The Shakers had few chances in the first half with David Buchanan's header easily saved by David Marshall.

After the break it was the visitors who enjoyed greater possession and they were rewarded when Bishop headed them into the lead with 19 minutes remaining.

Barry-Murphy swung a free-kick into the area and Bishop lost his marker to head in his fourth FA Cup goal of the season.

But any hopes of a surprise win were dashed when Fotheringham drew a fine save out of Provett, only for the ball to fall to Doherty who levelled to spare the Championship side's blushes.

Bury almost grabbed a late winner when Hurst found space to shoot in the area but his effort was wide of the target.
