Sad day for Bournemouth

Bournemouth chairman Jeff Mostyn says the club have been served with a winding-up petition by HM Revenue & Customs.

The debt-ridden League One club lodged a further notice of intent to appoint an administrator in an effort to stay in business earlier this week.

The Cherries are also the subject of takeover interest and Mostyn expressed his disappointment at the HMRC's decision, although he expects it to be quickly withdrawn.

"It is our understanding that HMRC has issued a winding-up petition against the football club," said Mostyn in a statement on the club's official website.

"We are extremely disappointed at the stance taken by the Revenue in issuing the petition without any consultation or negotiation to reach a reduced settlement.

"We understand the stance taken by the Revenue applies to all football clubs in as much as they will not negotiate unless they receive preferred status.

"Supporters can rest assured, however, that a further notice of intent to appoint an administrator was lodged and accepted by the High Court on Monday 4th February 2008, therefore affording the necessary protection to the football club from its creditors.

"In the circumstances, HMRC will be asked to withdraw their petition.

"I would once again like to reassure all supporters that I am working non-stop to bring my negotiations with both investors and individuals interested in purchasing the club to a satisfactory conclusion. All my efforts are geared towards securing the future of AFC Bournemouth."

The Cherries, who are rumoured to be £4million in debt, are currently third bottom in League One, but are just a point from safety.

I'm sad to hear about this Stunts, i hope everything works out for your club mate. Just remember whatever happens, which ever league you play in, your club belongs to the fans and if the fans stay united the club will never die

I was a little shocked when this came on the radio this morning, there was no warning from anyone that the HMRC would do what they have done.

My boss said once you have been served there is no going back unless you pay the full amount before or on the court date (march 12th i think) not sure how true that is. it don't look good either way

Don't like the chairman or the board they don't seem to know what they are doing

I wonder if the one eye'd idiot in number ten will do a northen rock for Bournemouth

I just caught a feature on BBC South Today which said that Bournemouth have been served a petition as opposed to a winding up order (the implication being that it wasn't necessarily all doom and gloom). In any case, I really hope that all turns out okay - I'd hate to see you (and any other team for that matter) go under.

Take heart from Luton & Swindon and to a certain extent Leeds. All have been through tough times but are looking a lot healthier now. Keep the faith.

Struggling League One side Bournemouth placed in administration and docked 10 points, report BBC Solent.

Looking forward to league two now
