Spain’s lethal strike partnership make Liverpool favourite to sign David Villa

Last night both Fernando Torres and David Villa scored the goals that guaranteed Spain ending the group stages as winners, and between them they have five goals so far in two games.

Spanish coach Luis Aragones has predicted that this partnership is likely to win the Euro2008 tournament for Spain: "If they both come up to the pitch, it almost guarantees that we would score at least one goal", he said .

"Defence is traditionally our main weak point, but we have other strong sides. If we manage to make use of them, Spain will achieve more than just worthy results at this championship."

It is obvious that the two together have an almost telepathetic understanding, and if they got together at club level this could be the missing link that turns Liverpool into world beaters. Benitez tried pairing Torres with Crouch, Kuyt and Babel last season without success, and then ended up playing him as a lone striker. Can you imagine if he had David Villa alongside scoring just as many as Torres? Ferguson and Scolari would be very very worried.

Villa himself recognised the importance of Torres to his play in the aftermath of Spains amazing 4-1 demolition of Russia: "The first two goals were with the help of Torres," said Villa.

"You saw what happened with the first one and with the second he opened the space so Andres Iniesta could make the pass to me," Villa added.

"I think he had a very important game, he’s a key player to us and I wanted to dedicate that third goal to make him happy."

Everyone knows that Valencia are going to sell Villa, and Liverpool must see that he is worth much more to them than Chelsea or Man Utd, due to the partnership factor, and should pull out all the stops.

You can guarantee that Villa himself would jump at the chance to play alongside Torres week in and week out. Together they could break all known records in the Premiership.
