Makelele set for retirement

Chelsea's veteran midfielder Claude Makelele has said that next summer's Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland will mark the end of his international career.

The 34-year-old France international helped his country navigate their way through a group in which they lost to Scotland twice, but he has no intention of prolonging his international career beyond next summer.

Makelele has hinted that he could even retire from club football when his Chelsea contract expires in 2009 after finding first-team opportunities limited recently - he has made only four Premier League appearances for the Blues so far this term.
